The All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman in Rogo Local Government Area of Kano State, Alhaji Abdullahi Fanka, has been abducted by gunmen who reportedly killed two residents during the attack.
The incident occurred late Monday night, barely a day after the killing of another APC official, Garba Buba, who headed the party in Rantan Ward, Bebeji Local Government Area.
According to a resident who spoke on Tuesday on condition of anonymity, the attackers stormed the Rogo community at about 11pm and opened fire as residents scrambled to escape.
The source said two people were killed while attempting to prevent the gunmen from taking Fanka away.
“The two people killed couldn’t stop them from whisking away the party chairman because they were in possession of sophisticated weapons,” the resident said.
The latest incident has added to a growing wave of attacks reported in parts of Kano in recent days, heightening fears among residents over the activities of suspected bandits and kidnappers.
On Sunday night, gunmen reportedly invaded Rantan community in Bebeji LGA, killing Buba and another resident identified as Sulaiman Zunduma.
The Kano State Police Command subsequently commenced an investigation and launched efforts to track down those responsible for the killings.
Before the Bebeji incident, suspected bandits had attacked Chiromawa in Garun Mallam LGA on Saturday night and abducted the Sarkin Noman Kano, Alhaji Yusif Nadabo.
Nadabo was later rescued following a security response involving police operatives and local residents. Three people were reportedly injured during the attack.
The attacks in Rogo, Bebeji and Garun Mallam occurred within roughly three days in neighbouring areas, intensifying concerns over the security situation in the state.
The development came as the Federal Government announced plans to formulate a five-year defence and security strategy.
The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Muhammad Matawalle, disclosed the plan on Monday, following a series of security incidents, including the recent attacks in Kano.
As of the time of filing the report, attempts to obtain an official reaction from the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, were unsuccessful.
Calls to his telephone line were unanswered, while a WhatsApp message sent to him had not received a response.
