Some prominent members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State are considering a return to the All Progressives Congress (APC) after meeting Governor Abba Yusuf and his deputy, Murtala Garo.
The development followed a solidarity visit by members of the political camp of Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, the NDC’s Kano Central senatorial candidate, to the state leadership on Tuesday night.
The delegation, led by Gawuna’s close associate, Muhammad Umar, included the NDC Vice Chairman in Kano, Ali Datti Yako, Mansur Gawuna and Uba Mijinyawa, popularly known as Uba Danzainab.
Others were Aminu Faruk, Sani Jibrin, Salisu Muhammad, Musa Indabo, Muhammad Bala, Hassan Abdullahi and Abdurrahman Muhammad.
The visit was disclosed in a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin Tofa.
Umar said the group’s engagement with Yusuf and Garo was driven by its interest in the development of Kano rather than political considerations.
He said the consultations were aimed at finding ways to contribute to government programmes and initiatives capable of improving the lives of residents.
“We are here because of our passion for the development and progress of Kano State. Our interest is in anything that will move Kano forward and improve the lives of its people,” Umar said.
Yako, who also expressed support for the Yusuf administration, said the governor’s efforts to transform the state were visible to residents.
He said the delegation came to demonstrate solidarity with Yusuf and Garo and support initiatives considered beneficial to Kano.
The visit is coming amid fresh political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 elections, with politicians and supporters across Kano reassessing their alliances.
Gawuna, a former deputy governor under ex-Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, contested the 2023 governorship election on the APC platform but lost to Yusuf, who ran on the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) ticket. The outcome was subsequently challenged in court.
Gawuna later emerged as the NDC candidate for Kano Central in the next electoral cycle, while his political associates are now reportedly weighing a return to the APC.
If the planned movement goes ahead, it could affect the strength and structure of both parties in Kano as the APC intensifies efforts to rebuild its political machinery ahead of 2027.
