Ride-hailing giant Uber is pulling out of Nigeria and Uganda, bringing its services in both countries to an end from Wednesday, September 2, 2026.
The company announced the decision in a statement, attributing the move to a review of its business operations in the two African countries.
Uber said its exit from Nigeria marks the end of more than a decade of operations since it introduced its platform in Lagos in 2014.
“After a thorough review, we have taken the difficult decision to wind down operations in Nigeria and Uganda, effective September 2, 2026,” the company said.
Reflecting on its 12-year presence in Nigeria, Uber thanked riders who used its platform for commuting, visiting family and friends and moving around Lagos.
The company acknowledged that the shutdown could disrupt the routines of its users and apologised for the inconvenience the decision may cause.
Uber also said it would provide support to drivers, riders and members of its local workforce as the company winds down its operations in the two countries.
The exit marks a major change for Nigeria’s ride-hailing market, where Uber has operated since 2014.
