A Nigerian graduate whose struggles to complete university were initially mocked online has received N14 million in donations after his story of hardship and perseverance emerged on social media.
Madumere Felix Nwachikerendu, a History graduate of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike, Ebonyi State, became the centre of attention on X after photographs of him during his final-year project defence were posted on August 31.
The images, shared by an X user, @vector_olal, attracted millions of views, with some users making fun of Felix’s appearance, clothing and delayed graduation.
But the online ridicule soon gave way to sympathy after another X user, Mercy Ninian, disclosed the circumstances surrounding his university journey.
Ninian said Felix battled severe financial difficulties while studying, forcing him to take on menial jobs to remain in school. She said he fetched water, washed clothes for fellow students, sold peanuts and other items and at some point slept in classrooms.
She also revealed that Felix initially struggled to pay his school fees after gaining admission and eventually lost his studentship after failing to meet the required CGPA.
Rather than abandon his education, he retook the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board examination and eventually returned to the university.
Felix later responded to the viral post, saying his delayed graduation should not be mistaken for laziness or a lack of commitment.
“You can laugh at the picture, but you don’t know the story behind it,” he said, explaining that he had been unable to graduate with his History Department set in 2023 because he had fallen behind academically but refused to quit.
His story quickly gained traction, with people who knew him coming forward to corroborate his struggles. One former roommate reportedly said he accommodated Felix for several months during his first year.
Popular X personality Wisdom Obi-Dickson, known as Sir Dickson Wizarab, subsequently joined the campaign for support and called on Nigerians to help Felix rebuild his life.
Wizarab made an initial donation of N100,000 and shared Felix’s account details, urging others to contribute.
The response was immediate.
Donations reportedly crossed N4 million within hours and continued climbing as the story spread across X. Subsequent updates put the amount above N5 million and later N10 million.
By Thursday, Wizarab announced that Nigerians had collectively raised N14 million for Felix.
“What began as a mockery turned out to be a miracle,” Wizarab said while thanking those who contributed.
He also disclosed that @Skolex5 would assist Felix with financial investment to help him manage and secure the funds.
Felix expressed gratitude to Wizarab and the donors, saying he would release a video to properly appreciate everyone who supported him.
Amid the attention, however, Felix warned social media users against circulating false information about him. He specifically denied reports that he had been attacked or injured, saying he was safe.
He also connected his experience to a promise he made to his late mother, saying he had vowed not to disappoint her, engage in illegal activities or bring shame to the family.
According to Felix, he created a poster in his mother’s memory on the day of his university sign-out as a tribute to her and a reminder of the commitment he had made.
Reflecting on the unexpected financial support, he said the experience had strengthened his faith and urged others to remain honest and treat people well.
“Be good to people. If you don’t see the result now, you will surely see the result later,” he said.
Felix also rejected attempts to compare his story with that of another person who had recently received attention and support online, saying he was not interested in competing with anyone.
“I’m here cause God wants me to be here and not to compete on who is the highest or whom to choose over another,” he said.
What began with strangers laughing at a photograph of a graduating student has therefore taken a dramatic turn, with Felix emerging from years of financial hardship with a university degree and N14 million in public donations.
His journey from selling peanuts, washing clothes and fetching water to complete his education has now become a social media story about resilience, second chances and the power of collective support.
