Jigawa State Governor Umar Namadi has approved the appointment of Dr Lawan Ahmed Muhammad Sani as the new Emir of Gumel, succeeding his late father, Alhaji Dr Ahmed Muhammad Sani II.
Lawan becomes the 17th Emir of Gumel, following his selection by the emirate’s kingmakers and subsequent approval by the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs.
The appointment was announced in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Malam Bala Ibrahim.
Before his emergence, the new monarch served as Chiroman Gumel and was also a Director of Cyber Security at the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
His selection followed a succession contest involving nine aspirants who indicated interest in occupying the traditional stool after the death of the former emir.
The kingmakers, led by the Wazirin Gumel, Alhaji Adamu Muhammad Nasoro, conducted the selection process and recommended Lawan for appointment.
The state government subsequently ratified the recommendation, concluding the process of choosing a successor to the late monarch, who died on September 3, 2026, after nearly 46 years on the throne.
Governor Namadi commended the Gumel Emirate kingmakers for conducting what he described as an important traditional process and acknowledged their role in ensuring the emergence of a new emir.
He also thanked members of the Jigawa State Council of Chiefs, particularly the Emirs of Hadejia, Kazaure, Ringim and Dutse, for their counsel and contributions throughout the selection process.
Namadi congratulated Lawan on his appointment and prayed for wisdom, good health and a successful reign.
The governor urged the new emir to preserve the legacy of previous rulers while promoting peace, unity and development across Gumel Emirate and the state.
The appointment comes shortly after the death of Ahmed Muhammad Sani II, who was among Jigawa’s longest-serving traditional rulers, having spent about 46 years on the throne.
The state government also reiterated its condolences to the late emir’s family, the Gumel Emirate, the Council of Chiefs and the people of Jigawa over his death.
It described the monarch’s passing as a major loss to both the emirate and the state, while praying for Allah SWT to forgive his shortcomings, accept his good deeds and grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.
The government further prayed for strength and patience for the royal family and the people of Gumel Emirate to cope with the loss.
