Six supporters of the Social Democratic Party governorship candidate in Nasarawa State, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, have died in a road accident in Lafia, the state capital.
The crash occurred on Monday at the Lafia flyover as the supporters travelled to a political event in Awe Local Government Area.
The Director of Media and Strategic Communications of Adamu’s campaign organisation, Otaru Douglas, confirmed the incident, saying several other supporters were injured.
“Our prayer is that God will repose the souls of those who died and grant quick recovery to those who sustained varying degrees of injuries,” Douglas said.
The candidate’s wife, Hajiya Rukayya, led a delegation to the homes of the deceased, where she commiserated with their families and prayed for the repose of the victims’ souls.
The Nasarawa State Government also expressed condolences to the SDP candidate and the families of those who died.
The Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Dr Nawani Aboki, described the crash as tragic and urged political campaigners and motorists to exercise caution.
“It’s sad that we lost people in the accident. The government continues to mourn with the families. This is not about party; it’s about people, citizens of Nasarawa State,” Aboki said.
He called on political parties and their supporters to prioritise road safety throughout the campaign season.
The Nasarawa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress also expressed sadness over the incident.
In a statement issued by its Publicity Secretary, Augustine Ogaba, the party described the crash as painful and condoled with the families of the victims and members of the SDP.
