The Federal Government has commissioned a 581kWp interconnected solar mini-grid in Oke-Oyi, Kwara State, with the capacity to provide electricity to about 13,000 residents.
The project was implemented by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA) as part of efforts to expand electricity access to underserved communities.
The mini-grid comprises 1,336 solar panels, 84 batteries, transformers and about 10 kilometres of distribution cables.
The intervention provides electricity to households and businesses in Oke-Oyi, with the government saying improved power supply has contributed to increased economic activities in the community.
Project data showed that 12 welding businesses, two pure water companies, four grain mills and four aluminium-related businesses had emerged in the community following improved electricity access.
The project has also supported an ice-block production business and a cold-room and ice-fish depot.
Three electricity vendors are currently operating in the community, while three additional vendors, including a female entrepreneur, are expected to be registered.
The project was developed by Nayo Tropical Technologies Limited with support from German Cooperation and the European Union through GIZ.
The government said the intervention was designed to expand access to reliable electricity while supporting businesses, creating economic opportunities and improving livelihoods in Oke-Oyi.
