President Bola Tinubu has said he will not attend every All Progressives Congress campaign rally ahead of the 2027 general election, citing the need to focus on governance, economic obligations and attracting long-term investors.
Tinubu made the announcement on Wednesday in Abuja while inaugurating the APC Presidential Campaign Council, directing its members to lead the party’s mobilisation efforts across the country while he attends to state matters.
The President said he agreed that campaign activities should not distract him from governing, stressing that Nigeria needed his attention.
“Nigeria needs more attention now,” he said.
Tinubu also pointed to the country’s financial obligations as a reason for limiting his participation in campaign tours.
“So, you will excuse me from going everywhere with you, we have bills to pay. The American creditors cannot wait,” he said.
He urged the campaign council to prioritise efforts to attract investors who would establish sustainable businesses and contribute to Nigeria’s long-term economic development.
“We want those investors to come in, be here to stay, to invest for the future of our children,” he said.
Although he would not attend every campaign event, Tinubu assured Nigerians that he would make time to address them directly while the council coordinated campaigns across states and local government areas.
He described the council’s inauguration as a renewed commitment to Nigerians, urging members to communicate the administration’s policies, achievements and vision to voters.
“This council will carry our vision, our records and our agenda to every Nigerian, and it will carry them to victory every ward of this country,” he said.
Tinubu also congratulated APC members on the successful completion of the party’s congresses, saying the process had been concluded despite predictions of an internal crisis.
“They said there will be implosion. We passed through it. We did not fail. You didn’t let us down. We got here together,” he said.
The President charged council members to deliver votes in their respective wards during the 2027 elections, warning that their efforts would not count as complete until they secured electoral support for the party.
“No one gets credit for an incomplete assignment. So, until you deliver the next election, until you deliver your wards, until you deliver the votes, before we can say thank you,” he said.
Tinubu expressed confidence in the APC’s chances in the election and thanked party members for their support, pledging that the governing party would not disappoint Nigerians.
