The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has launched an investigation into allegations of impropriety surrounding the receipt and disbursement of a N100m gift from the Imo State Government to its Owerri branch.

NBA President, Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, constituted a three-member committee following concerns raised by branch members and a request by 183 members for an Extraordinary General Meeting to address the matter.

In a statement posted on her X handle on Thursday, Badejo-Okusanya said the committee would examine the financial records and hear from all parties involved before submitting its findings and recommendations.

The committee comprises NBA General Secretary, Afam Okeke; Third Vice-President, Iniobong Pepple; and Treasurer, Esther Jimoh.

“I have constituted a three-member committee to investigate allegations of impropriety concerning the receipt, management and disbursement of the N100 million gift from the Imo State Government to the NBA Owerri Branch,” she said.

The committee is expected to submit its report to the NBA president no later than October 30, 2026.

Badejo-Okusanya confirmed that the Extraordinary General Meeting scheduled for Thursday, October 15, would proceed as planned, with the committee members attending as her representatives to observe proceedings and ensure order.

She also directed the branch chairman to provide the committee with access to the meeting venue and cooperate fully with the investigation.

The NBA president stressed that the probe was intended to establish the facts and address members’ concerns, warning that the allegations did not amount to a finding of wrongdoing against any individual.

“Everyone whose conduct is called into question will be given a fair opportunity to respond. All relevant financial records must be preserved and made available to facilitate a thorough examination,” she said.

Badejo-Okusanya added that accountability must be pursued alongside due process to maintain members’ confidence in the association.
