President Bola Tinubu has approved lifetime salaries for retired Comptrollers-General and Deputy Comptrollers-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has said.
Tunji-Ojo disclosed this on Friday at the closing ceremony of the Specialised Border Control and Immigration Management System Training at the Immigration Headquarters in Abuja, according to the News Agency of Nigeria.
He said the approval was part of the President’s efforts to improve the welfare of serving and retired personnel under the Ministry of Interior.
The minister said retired Comptrollers-General previously received pensions of about N130,000, describing the amount as inadequate.
“Previously, CGs had a pension of about N130,000; it was not encouraging. But what did the president do? He signed and approved salary for life for CGs and DCGs,” he said.
Tunji-Ojo also credited Tinubu with clearing promotion backlogs across services under the ministry, saying at least 50,000 personnel had advanced to new ranks and positions within three years.
He said the President had also increased recruitment, with no fewer than 40,000 personnel recruited at once, while approving salary increases and adjustments to hazard and peculiar allowances.
“It has never happened before, but Tinubu did it,” the minister said.
Tunji-Ojo praised the President’s commitment to institutional reforms and personnel welfare, urging immigration officers to reciprocate the support by performing their duties effectively and serving Nigerians better.
“And all he asks from us in the service is to do our jobs well and make Nigerians happy. Everything we have asked of him, he has done. This is the least we can do,” he said.
The minister described Tinubu’s policies as long-term investments intended to strengthen public institutions beyond his tenure.
He said the President recognised that while political officeholders would eventually leave office, the institutions they served would endure.
“What this president is doing is planting the seed so that the future will be abundant,” Tunji-Ojo said.
