The Department of State Services (DSS) has arrested Faisal Abdulrasheed Maina, son of convicted former Pension Reform Task Team chairman Abdulrasheed Maina, and handed him over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to enforce his 14-year prison sentence.
Faisal was arrested in the Karsana area of Abuja after security operatives reportedly received intelligence that he had secretly returned to Nigeria.
Security sources said he had been on the run since 2020 after allegedly violating his bail conditions in a money laundering case.
Faisal was prosecuted by the EFCC on a three-count charge bordering on money laundering and conspiracy. He subsequently absconded, but his trial continued in his absence.
In 2021, Justice Okon Abang sentenced him to 14 years’ imprisonment.
The court also ordered his arrest wherever he was found in Nigeria and directed that he be remanded in a correctional centre to serve his sentence.
It further ordered the Federal Government to take lawful steps to secure his extradition if he was found outside the country.
A security source said Faisal’s transfer to the EFCC was expected to facilitate the enforcement of the court’s judgment.
His father, Abdulrasheed Maina, is a former chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team who was convicted in a separate corruption case involving the diversion of pension funds.
