An angry mob has set a Bus Rapid Transit bus ablaze at Ogolonto Bus Stop along Ikorodu Road, Lagos State, following a fatal crash involving a motorcyclist.

The mob also attacked the bus driver before police officers and officials of the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps intervened and rescued him.

The Public Relations Officer of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Amodu Shakiru, confirmed the incident, saying firefighters received a distress call at about 10:21 a.m. on Friday.

He said personnel arrived to find the BRT bus engulfed in flames and successfully extinguished the fire.

“The information got to us at about 10:21 hrs, and on arrival at the scene, we met the BRT bus at Ogolonto Bus Stop, along Ikorodu Road, and we were able to douse the fire on the bus,” Shakiru said.

He added that the driver was beaten but survived the attack and received medical attention after being rescued by security operatives.

“It was reported that some aggrieved persons set the bus on fire because of an accident the BRT bus was involved in. The driver was beaten, but he is still alive,” he said.

Shakiru, however, said he could not provide further details about the crash.

A video circulating online showed the bus engulfed in flames as firefighters worked to put out the fire.

An X user, @kinglammyjames, claimed that the motorcyclist was crushed to death by the bus, prompting street youths to set it ablaze. The circumstances of the crash and the identity of the deceased had not been officially confirmed as of the time of filing this report.

Another X user, @AkinlabiOlabod1, also reported the burning of the bus. The user claimed that the deceased was associated with a local confraternity, but the allegation could not be independently verified.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority reported a separate road crash in the Ogolonto area on Friday.

In a post on X, LASTMA said a truck loaded with perishable goods crashed into two Toyota Coaster buses at Ogolonto, inward Agric, at about 4:53 p.m.

The agency attributed the crash to suspected brake failure and said no casualties were recorded.

LASTMA added that the vehicles had been moved to the roadside while its officials worked to manage traffic and resolve the obstruction.

It was not immediately clear whether the truck crash was connected to the incident in which the BRT bus was set ablaze.
