The Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, Ogun State, has launched an investigation into the death of a 22-year-old Post-Basic Nursing student, Taiwo Godwin, amid allegations that he was not given oxygen as his condition deteriorated.
The hospital said the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding Godwin’s death at its General Medical Practice Unit.
A media report on the incident said Godwin, who had asthma, was brought to the facility after experiencing difficulty breathing while playing football. A colleague reportedly alleged that oxygen was not administered despite his worsening condition.
The circumstances surrounding the student’s death have yet to be independently established.
The incident has also raised concerns because reports indicate that it was the second death of a nursing student from the same school at the hospital this year.
In a statement on Saturday, the hospital’s Public Relations Officer, Ajibola Abiola, said the management was committed to a thorough and impartial investigation.
“We recognise the profound grief and distress this unfortunate incident has caused and extend our sincere sympathies to all those affected.
“We wish to assure the students, staff, and the general public that an investigation into the circumstances surrounding this unfortunate incident is ongoing,” the statement said.
The management promised to expedite the process and conduct it transparently in line with established procedures.
“We further assure all concerned that every necessary step will be taken to establish the facts, address any issues identified, and ensure that justice is served. The hospital will continue to cooperate with the relevant authorities and stakeholders as required,” it added.
The hospital urged the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to proceed without prejudging its findings.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to patient safety, professional accountability and high standards of care, while expressing condolences to Godwin’s family, friends, colleagues and the nursing community.
