AAUA lecturers vow to halt students’ resumption, convocation over unpaid salaries

Lecturers at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA) in Ondo State, have threatened to disrupt students’ resumption and the forthcoming convocation if their outstanding salaries are not paid.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the institution has been on strike since last month over unpaid arrears, a development that has crippled academic activities.

The ASUU branch chairman, Dr. Boluwaji Oshodi, said the lecturers had shown enough patience but could no longer endure the state government’s failure to act.

“We have been patient and tolerant for a long time, but this time, we won’t be again. Our people have been pushed to the wall,” he said.

Oshodi added that attempts to meet Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa had failed, stressing that lecturers had endured extreme hardship, including conducting examinations “on an empty stomach.”

However, the Ondo State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Igbekele Ajibefun, dismissed claims that the government had abandoned the institution.

Ajibefun, a former Vice-Chancellor of AAUA, said the government had been engaging with the striking lecturers, assuring that the matter would soon be resolved.
