In celebration of World Environment Day 2025, the Abuja Mega Lions Club, in collaboration with the Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), FCT chapter, organized an environmental awareness event at Local Education Authority (LEA) Secondary School, Area 1, Garki, Abuja, on June 4.
This year’s global theme, “End Plastic Pollution,” set the tone for a series of impactful activities aimed at educating and empowering young people to embrace sustainable environmental practices.
Environmental expert Mr. Opeyemi Okunlola of NES led a sensitization session with the students, emphasizing the dangers of plastic pollution and introducing the 4Rs of waste management—Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Recover. He encouraged students to be proactive in protecting their surroundings through simple daily actions.

Lions Club member Ebele Chiatula further inspired the students during an engaging awareness session that painted a hopeful picture of a cleaner and greener future, driven by youth involvement.
A major highlight of the event was the ceremonial planting of various fruit and indigenous trees, including mango, orange, guava, soursop, and palm trees.
The tree planting was a symbolic act of environmental responsibility, carried out by the school’s Principal, Head Teacher, Head Girl, Head Boy, and members of the Abuja Mega Lions Club.
Additionally, an Environmental Club was officially launched within the school to promote ongoing environmental stewardship and leadership among students.
President of the Abuja Mega Lions Club, Lion Evelyn Bassey, expressed hope that initiatives like this would inspire lasting change and instill a strong sense of environmental responsibility in the younger generation.
