A candlelight procession was held on Tuesday in Awka, Anambra State, in honour of the late Ifesinachi Onyekere, son of a women leader of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), amid heavy security presence.
The procession, led by popular activist Martins Vincent Otse, also known as Very Dark Man, reportedly took place without the approval of the deceased’s family.
Onyekere, Managing Director of Fish Magnet, was abducted on July 27 at Ezinifite, Okpuno, after being shot in the leg by unidentified gunmen.
He later died in captivity from the untreated gunshot wound.
Security sources stated that Otse and his group were warned against any actions that could incite public unrest or disrupt peace in the state.
The procession began at Aroma Junction, passed through Amiyi to the Awka–Isiagu bypass, and ended back at Aroma Junction at about 6:30 p.m. No incidents of violence were reported during the event.
The exercise was closely monitored by a joint team comprising police officers, other security operatives, and local vigilantes.
The activist has since left the state.
