More than 40 individuals were arrested across Adamawa State on Saturday for violating the mandatory monthly environmental sanitation exercise.
The sanitation, which takes place on the last Saturday of every month from 7:00 am to 10:00 am, was monitored by the Adamawa State Monthly Sanitation Committee.
Addressing journalists after the exercise, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, Syngana Dadah, said the arrests were made primarily for engaging in business activities during the sanitation hours.
At Wuro-Kuturu along Jimeta By-pass in Yola, the committee intercepted charcoal sellers who defied the directive by operating during the restricted hours.
Their goods were confiscated on the spot.
Other areas monitored in Yola North Local Government Area included Luggere, Hospital Road, Nasarawo, and Doubeli.
Dadah emphasized that defaulters would be prosecuted in line with existing sanitation laws and assured the public that the ministry would intensify awareness campaigns to ensure better compliance in future exercises.
