The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has rejected the proposed salary increase for political office holders, describing it as insensitive at a time when millions of Nigerians are facing economic hardship.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, urged the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to suspend the plan, arguing that it showed disregard for citizens struggling with soaring inflation, high fuel costs and inadequate minimum wage.
Abdullahi said political office holders already enjoy multiple allowances and benefits far beyond the N70,000 minimum wage many Nigerians survive on, stressing that government should instead focus on raising workers’ pay, ensuring timely salaries, and strengthening social welfare programmes.
He maintained that leaders had no moral right to insulate themselves from hardship while demanding sacrifice from citizens.
