Adeleke jets out, orders probe into Osun kingship row

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has directed the state Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs to investigate a dispute over the traditional rulership of Koka Ilase in Obokun Local Government Area.

The directive came as Adeleke commenced a short vacation outside the country, during which he is also expected to undergo medical examinations.

A statement issued on Sunday by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, said Adeleke travelled to Europe for the break and would spend part of the period in the United Kingdom and other destinations, details of which would be announced later.

The governor described the trip as an opportunity to rest and prepare for his duties.

“I am taking a short break to refresh and get further prepared to serve the good people of Osun State,” Adeleke said.

While away, the governor directed the ministry to investigate reports that another traditional ruler had been appointed for Koka Ilase, allegedly resulting in two claimants to the Onikoka stool.

Rasheed said the ministry was instructed to examine the circumstances surrounding the reported appointment and ensure that the matter was handled in accordance with the state’s chieftaincy laws and established traditional practices.

Adeleke said he became aware of reports concerning the appointment of another king despite the existence of a monarch on the throne.

“I read of another king appointed outside the one on the stool. The ministry is hereby directed to look into the dispute and issue a report to set the records straight,” he said.

The governor urged all parties involved to maintain peace while the investigation is conducted, stressing that traditional rulership matters must be resolved within the framework of existing laws and customs.

“Kingship is governed by extant laws and regulations, and the government will stand by the law and tradition of our people,” Adeleke said.

The investigation is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the rival claim to the Koka Ilase traditional stool and provide a basis for the state government to determine the lawful position.
