Adenuga breaks silence on Papa Ajasco controversy

Veteran producer Wale Adenuga has responded to recent claims surrounding the popular Papa Ajasco franchise, clarifying issues related to the use of the brand and the welfare of actors associated with the long-running comedy series.

In a statement, Adenuga said his reaction followed a viral video and media interview involving Abiodun Ayoyinka, who is widely known for portraying the character Papa Ajasco. He noted that while he initially viewed the development as a creative extension of the brand into public spaces, the situation had since been surrounded by what he described as misinformation and emotional commentary.

Adenuga emphasised that Ayoyinka remains a respected figure within the production, describing him as a versatile actor who closely embodies the original cartoon character created in 1976. He added that there has been no irreconcilable dispute between them.

Addressing concerns about the actor’s welfare, Adenuga disclosed that Ayoyinka served with the Lagos State Government for over three decades before retiring, and had also benefited from opportunities during his time with the production. He noted that the actor had been provided vehicles at different times and owns a residence in Ogun State.

On the issue of branding, Adenuga clarified that the Papa Ajasco name is copyrighted and cannot be used for personal commercial ventures without proper authorisation. However, he stated that actors are not restricted from taking on other roles or endorsement deals, provided they obtain necessary approvals to protect the integrity of the brand.

He further explained that actors in the Papa Ajasco and Company series typically spend about six weeks annually on set, leaving them ample time to pursue other professional engagements.

The producer also dismissed claims of financial neglect, insisting that Wale Adenuga Productions operates in line with industry standards and meets its financial obligations to cast and crew.

Adenuga reaffirmed the company’s reputation for maintaining cordial relationships with its artistes and expressed appreciation for public concern, urging audiences to disregard what he described as misleading narratives about the organisation.
