The Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc. (AEDC) has restored electricity supply to the FCT Water Board, leading to the resumption of water supply across parts of the Federal Capital Territory.
In a statement, AEDC said the earlier disconnection was due to the Water Board’s failure to settle electricity bills accumulated for more than one year, despite repeated notices, engagements and opportunities to regularise the debt in line with regulatory provisions.
The company explained that the decision to reconnect power followed public concern and appeals from residents affected by the disruption in water supply.
Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of AEDC, Engr. Chijioke Okwuokenye, directed the immediate reconnection in view of the importance of water supply to public health and community wellbeing.
AEDC stressed that the reconnection was approved as an exceptional measure to ensure the prompt restoration of water services across the FCT.
However, the company noted that the reconnection is conditional.
The FCT Water Board has been given a two-week deadline to present and begin implementing a credible payment plan to address its outstanding electricity debt.
AEDC warned that failure to comply within the stipulated period could result in a fresh disconnection, in line with regulatory guidelines.
While reaffirming its openness to dialogue and collaboration, AEDC stated that disconnection remains a last resort and assured residents of its commitment to regulatory compliance, transparency and the delivery of sustainable electricity services in the FCT.
