AFCON: I felt nervous before Morocco–Nigeria semi-final — Referee

Ghanaian referee Daniel Laryea has admitted he was anxious ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) semi-final clash between hosts Morocco and Nigeria.

Laryea made the revelation on his return to Ghana, speaking to journalists at the Accra Airport, where he also rejected allegations that he showed bias in favour of the host nation during the match.

The highly competitive encounter ended 0–0 after extra time, before Morocco edged Nigeria 4–2 in a penalty shootout to secure a place in the final.

Reflecting on the experience, Laryea said officiating the game was a major moment in his career. “I’ve been to three AFCON tournaments, but this was my first time handling a semi-final,” he said.

“When coaches select you for such a match, it means they trust your ability and competence. Still, given the importance and intensity of the game, it’s natural to feel a bit anxious.”

He maintained that he remained focused throughout the encounter and carried out his duties professionally despite the pressure surrounding the high-profile fixture.
