MTN Group President and Chief Executive Officer, Ralph Mupita, has stressed that Africa’s future depends on greater social solidarity, economic integration and adherence to the rule of law amid rising diplomatic tensions triggered by anti-immigrant protests in South Africa and Ghana.

The recent incidents and the ensuing social media backlash have sparked concerns over their potential impact on relations with key economic partners, particularly Nigeria, and the broader investment climate on the continent.

In a post on his LinkedIn page ahead of a migration dialogue organised by the Kgalema Motlanthe Foundation, Mupita warned that divisions driven by Afrophobia and hostility towards fellow Africans could undermine Africa’s development aspirations.

“The future of Africa depends on greater social solidarity, increasing economic integration and the observance of the rule of law,” he stated.

Mupita’s comments come against the backdrop of recurring anti-immigrant attacks that have drawn criticism for damaging Africa’s reputation and discouraging foreign investment.

He emphasised the importance of the rule of law in protecting both individuals and businesses operating across borders, warning against retaliatory actions and mob justice.

Speaking to Bloomberg, the MTN chief said the company had not experienced any direct impact on its operations but remained alert to developments in its key markets.

“We have not seen impacts specifically to our business, but we’re very sensitive in markets such as Nigeria and Ghana,” he said.

Mupita maintained that stronger economic partnerships and respect for the rule of law are essential to overcoming divisions and building a more resilient and integrated African economy.
