After 68-day recess, National Assembly fixes October 13 resumption

Members of the National Assembly have adjourned plenary for another two weeks, just a day after returning from a 68-day annual recess.

The lawmakers resumed on Tuesday after the 2026 annual recess, which began on July 23 following the conclusion of plenary proceedings.

The Senate had initially scheduled September 15 for resumption but extended the date to September 29 to allow repairs to the sound systems in both chambers.

However, after reconvening on Tuesday, the lawmakers adjourned again until October 13.

In the Senate, the fresh adjournment followed deliberations on Nigeria’s security challenges.

The Senate said its next sitting would coincide with the conclusion of its planned National Security Summit, which is expected to bring together lawmakers, service chiefs, security agencies and other stakeholders.

The summit is expected to examine intelligence and territorial security concerns and develop strategies to address the country’s security challenges.

The House of Representatives also adjourned after considering key fiscal matters, including the extension of the implementation period for the capital component of the 2025 Appropriation Act.

A lawmaker told our correspondent that both chambers are expected to resume full legislative activities and committee assignments when they reconvene on October 13.

The latest adjournment means lawmakers will spend only a brief period in plenary before returning to their regular legislative and committee duties in mid-October.
