‘Amaechi is a loafer outside public office’ — APC mocks him over mother’s medication claim

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi over his recent claim that he could not afford medications for his late mother, Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi.

In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, the APC expressed condolences over the death of Amaechi’s mother but questioned the former governor’s account of his financial situation.

Amaechi, a former two-term Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two-term governor and two-term Minister of Transportation, is currently the African Democratic Congress (ADC) vice-presidential candidate.

The APC recalled Amaechi’s previous comment that he had become financially constrained and that his wife was feeding him, saying his latest claim about being unable to afford his mother’s medication raised questions about his financial circumstances after leaving public office.

The party said Amaechi had spent decades occupying senior public offices and accused him of relying excessively on political patronage.

“Three years out of office, he has become destitute, unable to fend for himself and his loved ones,” the statement said.

The APC also mocked Amaechi’s reported financial difficulties, saying it hoped employers in his hometown of Ubima, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, would find him a job that could provide for his needs.

The party further questioned Amaechi’s suitability for public office, accusing him of seeking the vice-presidency to return to what it described as dependence on public resources.

“The presidency is not a soup kitchen and will not be a soup kitchen for Rotimi Amaechi,” Morka said.

The APC also said Amaechi’s own statements had raised questions about his suitability for the position of vice-president.

The statement was signed by Morka and dated October 4, 2026, in Abuja.
