The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has announced that local vigilante groups will not be part of the security arrangements for the November 8 governorship election in the state.
Orutugu made this known on Monday during visits to the Ihiala Area Command and Oraifite Divisions, as part of his statewide engagements on election security and community sensitisation.
He reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s readiness to ensure a peaceful, secure, and credible electoral process, stressing that the protection of lives and property remains the Force’s top priority.
The Police Commissioner emphasised that patriotism during elections requires citizens to reject intimidation, resist fear tactics, and participate freely in choosing their leaders.
While addressing officers under the area commands, Orutugu urged them to demonstrate discipline, professionalism, and respect for human rights, maintaining the highest standards of conduct throughout the election period.
“Policing must remain people-centred, intelligence-driven, and guided by respect for human dignity,” he said.
He further disclosed that the Joint Security Framework in the state remains operational and will be reinforced across communities to block criminal infiltration and sustain peace before, during, and after the polls.
Orutugu also called on residents to remain law-abiding and cooperative, urging them to share credible information that could assist ongoing security operations.
“We encourage Ndi Anambra to stay peaceful, vigilant, and supportive of security agencies to ensure a safe and credible election,” he added.
