Anglican Church inaugurates Oyo South Missionary Diocese, enthrones Familoni as first Bishop

The Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion) has inaugurated the Missionary Diocese of Oyo South and enthroned its pioneer bishop, The Right Reverend Dr. Olufemi Familoni, in a historic ceremony held at the Cathedral Church of St. John’s, Akinmoorin, Oyo State.

The event, presided over by the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, The Most Reverend Henry C. Ndukuba, brought together more than 40 bishops and archbishops, government officials, traditional rulers, and a large gathering of Anglican faithful from across the country.

With its inauguration, Oyo South becomes the 167th Diocese in the Church of Nigeria.

The formal proclamation by the Primate was greeted with joy by the congregation, who described the development as a significant milestone for the Church and surrounding communities.

Delivering his inaugural sermon, Bishop Familoni urged Christians to remain steadfast, prayerful, and courageous despite the security challenges facing the nation.

He also appealed to all levels of government to intensify efforts to protect citizens and promote peace.

He said the new Diocese would be guided by a vision to reflect the light of Christ through outreach to the less privileged, noting that its mission is inspired by the biblical example of Abraham, who stepped out of his comfort zone and fulfilled God’s purpose.

Bishop Familoni outlined priorities for the Diocese, including missionary expansion, youth development, cooperation with traditional institutions, and targeted support for vulnerable groups.

Members of the Diocese said the creation of Oyo South will bring the Church’s spiritual, pastoral, and social services closer to communities across the Akinmoorin, Awe, Fiditi, Jobele, and Ilora areas of Oyo State.

The colourful service featured hymns, prayers, thanksgiving, and the rites of enthronement, marking the beginning of a new chapter of ministry in Oyo South.
