Another prince from Ogun State has declared interest in the vacant stool of the Awujale of Ijebuland.
Adebowale Olufeko, a member of the Bubiade Family of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House in Ijebu-Ode, says his aspiration is driven by service, cultural preservation, unity and development.
The Awujale stool became vacant following the death of the paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, in July 2025.
Speaking with journalists in Ijebu-Ode on Friday, Olufeko, a lawyer, chartered arbitrator and mediator, described himself as a bona fide candidate of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, citing his lineage, experience and commitment to the progress of Ijebuland as qualifications for the throne.
Olufeko said his decision to vie for the revered stool was based on duty, loyalty, antecedents and a desire to contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic growth of the kingdom.
He added that his professional background and global exposure would enable him to attract development opportunities and elevate the annual Ojude Oba Festival into a larger international cultural and economic event.
“I am offering myself because I believe our people deserve a future that is peaceful, prosperous and united,” he said, pledging continued support for youths, artisans, professionals and vulnerable groups across Ijebuland.
He noted that the Fusengbuwa Ruling House is next in line to produce the Awujale, describing the throne as a sacred institution central to the identity and history of the Ijebu people.
“The Awujale throne is a sacred trust. It embodies the spirit and heritage of our people and must be safeguarded with honour and vision,” Olufeko said.
Outlining his plans, he promised to uphold Ijebu customs and traditions while pursuing modern development initiatives.
He also proposed the establishment of a polo club in honour of the late Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, Ogbagba II, in recognition of the Ijebu people’s historical association with horse riding.
Olufeko further pledged to work with traditional chiefs, kingmakers, government authorities and other stakeholders to ensure peace and development, adding that the quest for the creation of Ijebu State would be a major priority if he emerges as Awujale.
He expressed gratitude to the Olori Ebis for maintaining unity within the Bubiade Royal Family, commended traditional rulers and chiefs in Ijebuland for their support to the late monarch, and praised the Ogbeni Oja of Ijebuland, Dr Sonny Kuku, for his role as regent during the interregnum.
He also acknowledged Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, for infrastructural and economic development in the area.
“With unity and collective effort, Ijebuland will rise to a new level of greatness,” Olufeko said.
Meanwhile, several princes and ruling houses have continued to declare interest in the Awujale throne, suggesting that the process of selecting a new monarch may soon commence.
