National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Nentawe Yilwatda, has met with the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, in a closed-door engagement at the monarch’s palace.
Yilwatda visited the Rumfa Palace on Saturday, August 22, shortly after Sanusi returned to Kano from Abuja.
The meeting was described as a courtesy visit, although neither the APC nor the Kano Emirate disclosed what was discussed.
Muhammad Dallatu, an associate of the Emir, confirmed the visit on Sunday, saying Yilwatda arrived at the palace after the monarch returned from Abuja.
According to Dallatu, the two men held a private meeting at the palace, and details of the discussion could not be disclosed because of its confidential nature.
The engagement comes as the APC continues to consolidate its political presence in Kano following the defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and several members of the Kwankwasiyya political camp to the ruling party.
Yilwatda had earlier visited Yusuf in February, where he spoke about the party’s proposed 60/40 power-sharing arrangement between the governor’s political camp and existing APC members in the state.
Kano remains a strategically important state for the APC because of its large electorate and influence in northern politics.
Sanusi, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, has also remained a prominent voice on economic, social and governance issues beyond his traditional role.
His return as Emir followed the repeal of the law that created additional emirates in Kano in 2024. The law, introduced under former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, had led to Sanusi’s removal in 2020 and the installation of Aminu Ado Bayero.
Sanusi’s reinstatement subsequently triggered renewed legal battles over the Kano throne, with Bayero and his supporters challenging the process in court.
No official statement has linked Yilwatda’s latest visit to the emirate dispute, the APC’s political activities in Kano or any specific policy issue.
The outcome of the closed-door meeting remains undisclosed.
