The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticised former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi over his claim that he won the 2023 presidential election despite admitting he had no evidence to support it.
The party, in a statement on Friday signed by Dele Alake, spokesman for the APC Presidential Campaign Council, described Obi’s remarks as a disregard for facts and electoral records.
Obi reportedly made the statement during an interview with the BBC, saying, “I don’t like going back to the past. I won the last election. There’s no evidence, but I won the election. Everything is not based on evidence.”
Reacting, the APC accused the former Anambra State governor of making unsubstantiated claims, arguing that his remarks were unbecoming of someone aspiring to lead Nigeria.
The party insisted that President Bola Tinubu won the 2023 presidential election, adding that the Independent National Electoral Commission declared him the winner and that the election tribunal and Supreme Court upheld the result.
The APC also defended Tinubu’s administration, saying it had introduced reforms aimed at stabilising the economy, expanding infrastructure, supporting businesses and young people, improving education and healthcare, and creating jobs.
The party further challenged Obi to honour an earlier pledge to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race if it was established that his administration left liabilities in Anambra State.
Alake said the state’s financial records had established the alleged liabilities, although the statement did not provide details of the records or the amount involved.
Obi contested the 2023 presidential election on the Labour Party platform and finished third, behind Tinubu of the APC and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party.
