Argentina matches to pause for Messi tribute

Football matches across Argentina will stop for one minute on the 10th minute of play during the next round of fixtures as the country’s football authorities honour Lionel Messi.

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) said the tribute would be observed across both men’s and women’s competitions, with supporters expected to join players and officials in a minute-long applause for the Argentina captain.

The 10th-minute stoppage is a symbolic reference to Messi’s iconic No. 10 shirt, which he has worn throughout his international career.

According to the AFA, the gesture is intended to celebrate Messi’s contribution to the Argentina national team and recognise the legacy he has built during his years representing the country.

Messi has enjoyed a decorated international career with Argentina, helping the national team secure major honours and cementing his status as one of the country’s most celebrated footballers.

The tribute comes amid reports that the 39-year-old forward has decided to bring his international career to an end after two decades with the national team.

Messi reportedly said he had “nothing more to give” to Argentina, bringing fresh attention to what could be his final chapter with the team.

The nationwide applause is expected to give fans an opportunity to celebrate the career of a player who has become synonymous with Argentina’s modern football history.
