An Arik Air Boeing 737-700 flying from Lagos to Port Harcourt made an emergency diversion to Benin Airport on Wednesday after the crew detected a loud bang from one of the aircraft’s engines mid-flight.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) later confirmed that the incident involved significant damage to the affected engine, though no injuries were recorded.
According to the airline’s spokesperson, Adebanjo Ola, the aircraft, registered as 5N-MJF and operating flight W3 740, had departed from Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and was descending toward Port Harcourt when the crew heard an unusual noise from the left engine.
“As a precautionary measure, the crew diverted safely to Benin,” Ola said.
The aircraft landed without further complications, and all 80 passengers and crew members were safely evacuated. Arik Air arranged onward transportation to Port Harcourt for those affected.
“We sincerely apologise to passengers whose travel plans were disrupted. The safety and well-being of our passengers remain our top priority,” the airline added.
Confirming the development, NSIB’s Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji, described the situation as an in-flight engine anomaly. She explained that abnormal engine indications prompted the pilots to shut down the engine and divert to the nearest suitable airport in line with standard safety procedures.
“The aircraft landed safely, and passengers disembarked normally. No injuries were reported,” she said.
The bureau has launched a full investigation in accordance with its statutory responsibilities and international aviation standards under ICAO Annex 13.
Initial inspections at Benin Airport revealed visible damage to the engine. A preliminary assessment team has been dispatched to secure the aircraft, collect evidence, interview crew and witnesses, and retrieve flight data and cockpit voice recorders.
NSIB said a preliminary report will be released within 30 days, with a final report to follow after the investigation is completed.
