The Nigerian media industry is in shock following the death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a news anchor, reporter, and producer with ARISE News Channel, who was killed during an armed robbery at her home in Katampe, Abuja.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Monday. Maduagwu, fondly called Sommie by colleagues, was 29.
In a statement confirming her death, ARISE News described her as “a cherished member of the ARISE News family” whose voice “engaged and connected with our viewers.”
The channel added: “Sommie’s voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory.
“We call for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits.”
The Nigeria Police have since launched an investigation into the incident.
Born on December 26, 1995, Maduagwu studied law before venturing into broadcast journalism, where she quickly rose to prominence as a vibrant and professional presence on screen.
Her colleagues and management have described her passing as a devastating loss, not only to ARISE News but to the Nigerian media community as a whole.
