The Yobe State Government has clarified that the Nigerian Army Special Forces Training School in Buni Yadi has not been shut down but redesignated as the Nigerian Army Acclimatisation Centre.
Brig.-Gen. Dahiru Abdulsalam (rtd), Special Adviser on Security to Governor Mai Mala Buni, explained in a statement on Saturday that the centre will continue its critical role of preparing troops for induction into the North-East Theatre of Operations.
His clarification followed concerns raised by residents after the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, announced on Friday that the Special Forces Training School would be relocated from Buni Yadi to Doma, Nasarawa State.
“The Special Forces School in Buni Yadi has always conducted acclimatisation and pre-induction training for troops deployed to the North-East, while the specialised training itself was conducted elsewhere,” Abdulsalam said.
He explained that the establishment of the Special Forces Command in Doma made it necessary to co-locate the training school with the new command headquarters. This, he added, led to the foundation-laying ceremony conducted in Nasarawa by the Army Chief.
“For clarity, the Buni Yadi school is now the Nigerian Army Acclimatisation Centre and will continue to carry out its role in preparing forces for operations in the North-East,” he said.
Abdulsalam commended the public for their concerns and for supporting security agencies in the fight against insurgency.
