The Nigerian Army has alerted the public to a growing trend of cyber fraud involving fake social media accounts posing as senior military officers, especially on Facebook.
In a statement released on Sunday via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the Army disclosed that scammers had created fraudulent accounts in the name of Major General Raymond Utsaha, the Deputy Chief of Standards and Evaluation, while using the photograph of Major General Bamidele Alabi, the Chief of Policy and Plans.
According to the statement, the impersonators are using these fake identities to deceive unsuspecting Nigerians through false claims and unauthorized online interactions, often with the aim of financial exploitation.
The Army emphasized that the accounts are entirely fake and warned the public to ignore any messages, friend requests, or financial demands linked to them.
It further clarified that senior military officers do not carry out official duties, award contracts, or request money through personal social media accounts or informal online channels.
The Army urged citizens to stay vigilant and promptly report suspicious online activities to relevant security agencies. It also reaffirmed its commitment to tracking down and taking action against those behind such fraudulent schemes.
