ASUU begins indefinite strike at Plateau varsity

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Plateau State University has embarked on an indefinite strike over various unresolved demands.

The ASUU chairman in the university, Dr Vincent Choji, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

Choji said the decision for the industrial action was reached during ASUU congress held on Tuesday, adding that the strike was declared at the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued by the union.

Choji said the strike was declared due to the failure of the Plateau State Government to meet the demands of ASUU members.

He noted that part of the issues included the non-implementation of the 2025 agreement reached between the union and the federal government.

He stated: “Our other demands include the commencement of the contributory pension scheme for our members, provision of safe and secure staff quarters and construction of trenches around the university’s perimeter fence.

“We also call for the cessation of the intimidation of union leaders, as observed in the letter to congress dated May 18, through the Registrar of the university, and payment of 22 months’ arrears of the 25%/35% wage award.

“Congress has therefore, with the approval of the National Executive Council of our union, resolved to proceed on a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike.

“By this notice, all members of ASUU are hereby directed to suspend all academic activities until further notice.”
