ASUU declares strike in three Lagos universities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has declared an indefinite strike at three state-owned universities in Lagos over the non-implementation of key provisions of its 2025 agreement with the Federal Government.

The affected institutions are Lagos State University, Lagos State University of Education and Lagos State University of Science and Technology.

The decision was announced on Tuesday by the ASUU Joint Campus Group of Lagos State-owned universities after the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Lagos State Government.

The union said the ultimatum expired on August 31 without a satisfactory resolution or a concrete plan from the government to address its demands.

In a statement signed by officials of the union at the three universities, ASUU said the state government also failed to initiate dialogue before the September 13 deadline.

The union’s major demand is the full domestication and implementation of the December 2025 ASUU-FGN agreement across the three institutions.

It said the demand covers the implementation of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and other welfare provisions for serving and retired academic staff.

ASUU said the strike would remain in force until meaningful negotiations produce an acceptable resolution and the agreement is domesticated and implemented by the state government.

The union added that its national leadership had endorsed the industrial action and appealed to students and parents to remain calm and law-abiding.

ASUU gives Taraba varsity government 14-day ultimatum

Meanwhile, the ASUU branch at Taraba State University, Jalingo, has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the state government over outstanding provisions of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement.

The union said some provisions of the agreement had yet to be implemented by the Taraba State Government, warning that it could resort to lawful measures to protect its members’ interests if the issues remained unresolved.

The ultimatum was contained in a statement signed by the branch chairman, Dr Joshua Garba Mbave, and issued in Jalingo on Tuesday.

According to the union, the final 14-day notice commenced on September 14 and will expire on September 28, 2026.

It urged the state government to urgently address the outstanding issues before the deadline.

Plateau varsity ASUU suspends strike

In Plateau State, however, ASUU has suspended its strike at Plateau State University following an agreement with the state government on the union’s six-point demands.

The branch took the decision at an emergency congress meeting in Jos on Tuesday after reviewing the issues that prompted the industrial action on August 26.

In a statement signed by the branch chairperson, Dr Vincent D. Choji, and secretary, Dr Lomka Iliya Kopdiya, the union said the suspension followed an agreement reached between representatives of the state government and the union.

“Having reviewed the agreement, Congress resolved that the strike be suspended with effect from 12 midnight, September 16, 2026,” the statement said.

The union subsequently directed its members to resume academic activities following the suspension.
