ASUU gives conditions to end strike at Ondo varsity

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa in Ondo State, says its ongoing strike would not be called off until all its demands were fully met by the management.

The OAUSTECH ASUU Chairman, Dr Oluwatoyin Ogunbamike, made this known in Okitipupa on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

OAUSTECH ASUU commenced an indefinite strike on August 12 over non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government–ASUU Agreement.

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa had on August 17 approved a 60 per cent increase in monthly subvention and the immediate implementation of the agreement reached between the federal government and university unions in the state-owned institutions.

Speaking on the development, Ogunbamike while acknowledging Aiyedatiwa’s approvals said until the institution’s management implements all the demands of the union, ASUU would not call off the ongoing strike.

Ogunbamike said: “We have been duly informed that Aiyedatiwa has approved a 60 per cent increment in the monthly subvention to tertiary institutions in the state.

“Furthermore, he has approved the implementation of the Federal Government ASUU agreement to commence in August.

“This unilateral pronouncement is in direct contradiction to the extant agreement which stipulated implementation to take effect from January 1, 2026.”

He lamented that Ondo State, listed among the oil-producing states, was paying lip service to educational development.

The ASUU chairman added: “It is disheartening that a state that receives substantial monthly allocations from the federation account, is demonstrating such manifest insensitivity to the educational sector and, more specifically, to the welfare of academics.

“While the political class continues to receive their allowances, arrears and emoluments promptly and without delay, the government has chosen to renege on its obligation to us.

“Let it be unequivocally stated that we remain on strike, and nothing will compel us to suspend the industrial action until our legitimate demands are fully met.”
