At last, Kano Gov Yusuf joins APC on Monday

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is set to formally defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday, according to political sources familiar with the development.

The planned move, which has generated intense discussion within political circles in Kano and beyond, comes after extended negotiations between Governor Yusuf and leaders of the APC.

The state chapter of the ruling party has already signalled its readiness to receive him.

Governor Yusuf’s expected defection is seen as part of broader political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, and it has heightened tensions within the NNPP.

The party’s national leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has openly criticised defection talks and warned against abandoning the party platform.

The potential switch has also unsettled political structures in Kano, with some local government leaders and party stakeholders divided over the governor’s decision.

If confirmed, Yusuf’s departure would represent a significant shift in Kano’s political landscape, strengthening the APC’s influence in one of Nigeria’s key northern states.
