Former Abia State governor and senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has expressed confidence that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will secure a second term in office in the 2027 presidential election, saying that none of Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, or Goodluck Jonathan poses a real threat to his re-election.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Kalu said Tinubu’s achievements so far, especially in stabilising the economy, have strengthened his chances of victory in 2027.
“I don’t see anyone among Atiku, Obi, or Jonathan defeating President Tinubu in 2027,” Kalu said. “He has done well in turning the economy around, and Nigerians will reward him with another term.”
Kalu, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), also advised former President Goodluck Jonathan against contesting, arguing that he is constitutionally barred from running again.
He further took aim at former President Olusegun Obasanjo, accusing him of attempting to distort history by denying his alleged third-term ambition while in office.
“Obasanjo personally told me he wanted a third term, and I objected immediately because it was unconstitutional and dangerous for our democracy,” Kalu stated. “He can’t deny it now. Many of the governors he spoke to about it are still alive. The United States also played a key role in stopping that plan.”
The senator claimed that Obasanjo’s denial was an attempt to “rewrite history,” adding that incidents such as his clashes with former Rivers Governor Peter Odili and the removal of former Senate President Adolphus Wabara were connected to his failed third-term bid.
On the issue of national unity, Kalu lamented the continued marginalisation of the Igbo, saying the region has yet to be fully integrated into Nigeria since the civil war.
“I still have an interest in leading this country someday,” Kalu said. “But for now, my full support is with President Tinubu and the APC. I am confident he will win again in 2027.”
Kalu reiterated that only a united Nigeria—free from ethnic bias—can progress, adding that the Southeast remains committed to national development despite long-standing exclusion from key political positions.
