Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has revealed that his recent meeting with former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi focused on Nigeria’s worsening economic and security challenges, as well as the urgent need for collective national solutions.
Atiku disclosed this in a post on his X handle on Thursday following a visit to Amaechi’s residence in Abuja. He said their discussions went beyond pleasantries, describing them as “deep and honest conversations” about the country’s current state and the role of patriotic citizens in reversing the trend.
He noted that both leaders reflected on rising economic hardship and insecurity, stressing the need for sustained engagement to steer Nigeria away from what he described as “drift and despair.”
During the visit, Atiku also congratulated Amaechi on his birthday, adding a touch of humour by referencing Arsenal’s recent success. He described Amaechi as “a thoroughly well-loaded Gunner,” noting that the former minister took the banter in good spirits.
Atiku further recounted the warm reception he received, saying Amaechi apologised for not preparing Fisherman Soup, a Rivers delicacy, but promised to do so during a future meeting.
The meeting comes shortly after Atiku emerged as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general election, defeating Amaechi and former banker Mohammed Hayatu-Deen at the party’s primary held in Abuja.
According to official results, Atiku polled 1,846,370 votes, while Amaechi secured 504,117 votes and Hayatu-Deen garnered 177,120 votes. The party leadership, led by former Senate President David Mark, subsequently presented Atiku with the party’s flag.

Following his victory, Atiku appealed to both Amaechi and Hayatu-Deen to join forces with him ahead of the general election. However, the two contenders rejected the outcome of the primary, alleging irregularities in the process, with Hayatu-Deen also declining to attend the official announcement of results.
