Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)
Atiku, the PDP presidential candidate in the 2023 election, announced his resignation from the opposition party via a letter addressed to the chairman of his ward in Jada 1, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State.
The letter dated Monday, July 14, 2025, was obtained by The Star on Wednesday, July 16.
The former vice president is currently leading an opposition coalition to unseat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.
Atiku, who hinged his decision on the crisis rocking the PDP, stated that he was withdrawing his membership from the opposition party with immediate effect.
Atiku said: “It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged.
“I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”

Atiku, who served as Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007 under President Olusegun Obasanjo, expressed appreciation for the opportunities the party had given him over the years.
He acknowledged the roles the PDP played in shaping his political career, including twice fielding him as a presidential candidate.
Atiku added: “Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a Presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life.
“As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision.”
Atiku’s resignation is expected to send ripples through Nigeria’s political landscape, as he remains a significant figure in national politics.
Although he did not disclose his next political move, his departure has sparked speculation about possible alignments ahead of the 2027 general election.
He concluded his letter by wishing the PDP and its leadership success in the future.
Atiku, also known as the Waziri of Adamawa, has long been a central figure in Nigerian politics and has previously left and returned to the PDP on multiple occasions.
