Adamu Atiku Abubakar, the first son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has stepped down as Adamawa State Commissioner for Works and Energy Development.
His resignation from the cabinet of Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri was confirmed in a statement issued on Monday by his media aide, Abdulaziz Jauro.
According to the statement, Adamu formally tendered his resignation in a letter dated March 2, 2026, expressing appreciation to the governor for the opportunity to serve the people of Adamawa State in what he described as a strategic and impactful role.
He reportedly conveyed “profound gratitude” to Governor Fintiri for the confidence reposed in him during his two terms in office, noting that serving as commissioner was “an honour of immense significance.”
Adamu also thanked his father for his moral support and blessings throughout his tenure. He commended the permanent secretaries, directors, engineers, and staff of the Ministries of Works and Energy for their professionalism and dedication to infrastructural development across the state.
Special appreciation was extended to the people of Jada, his home community, for their prayers and support while in office.
The former commissioner stated that his resignation does not signal a withdrawal from public service but rather opens new opportunities for continued developmental engagement in Adamawa State. He pledged ongoing commitment to the unity, growth, and progress of the state.
Adamu was notably absent at the Government House last Thursday when Governor Fintiri defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), fueling speculation about his next political move.
Though he is yet to officially declare his platform, sources close to his father suggest he may be eyeing higher political office. While there are reports of a possible governorship ambition, insiders indicate that Atiku may have endorsed him for a senatorial bid instead.
Meanwhile, his half-brother, Abba Atiku, is reportedly set to contest for a seat in the House of Representatives on the platform of the APC.
Adamu is the first son of Atiku’s first wife, Titi, while Abba is the son of Atiku’s second wife, Laadi Yakubu.
