Babcock University has disowned a certificate circulating on social media and allegedly linked to comedian and content creator Carter Efe, describing the document as fake and warning that those behind its creation could face legal action.
In a statement issued on Monday, the university said the purported “Honorary Certificate” claiming to award Oderohiwo Joseph Efe, popularly known as Carter Efe, a “First Class Upper” did not originate from the institution.
Babcock said the document was fraudulent and should be disregarded by the public, employers and academic institutions.
The university explained that it does not issue honorary certificates for undergraduate academic performance and noted that there is no degree classification known as “First Class Upper” in its academic system.
It added that the highest undergraduate classification awarded by the institution is First Class Honours, making the claims on the circulating certificate inconsistent with its academic standards.
The institution urged anyone seeking to verify academic credentials purportedly issued by Babcock University to do so through the Office of the Registrar.
It also warned that it would take appropriate legal and criminal action against any individual or group found forging its certificates or unlawfully using the university’s name or identity.
The statement comes amid widespread circulation of the purported certificate on social media, where it was alleged to have been issued to Carter Efe.
