Bandits caught on camera moving freely through checkpoint

A video circulating online has sparked concerns after showing armed men moving through a police checkpoint without interference in Northwest Nigeria.

In the footage, obtained by THESTAR, several armed individuals riding motorcycles were seen passing through the checkpoint while police officers appeared to direct and acknowledge them as they moved along the route.

According to security sources, the incident reportedly occurred along a corridor between Zamfara and Sokoto states, two areas that have experienced persistent bandit attacks in recent years.

A voice heard in the video, speaking in Hausa, expressed concern over the scene, saying that armed bandits were moving freely with their weapons.

Another person in the vehicle recording the footage quickly cautioned him against speaking further.

The authenticity of the video and the circumstances surrounding the encounter could not be independently verified at the time of filing this report.

The development has renewed concerns over security challenges in parts of Northwest and North-Central Nigeria, where states such as Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina and Niger have continued to grapple with banditry, kidnappings and violent attacks.

Despite ongoing military and police operations across the region, armed groups have remained active, carrying out attacks on communities, abducting residents and disrupting economic activities.

In 2019, the Zamfara State Government under then-Governor Bello Matawalle entered into a peace agreement with armed groups operating in the state. However, attacks and kidnappings continued in several communities despite the initiative.

Authorities have yet to officially comment on the video or the allegations surrounding the incident.
