Bandits kill 11, injure two in Kankara community

No fewer than 11 people have been killed in a fresh bandit attack on Gurbi village in Kankara, Katsina State.

The incident, which occurred around 2:40 p.m. on Sunday, also left two others injured, according to the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq.

In a statement issued on Monday, the police said suspected bandits stormed the village and opened fire on residents, killing 11 people before security operatives arrived at the scene.

A joint security team comprising the police, military, and other agencies was swiftly deployed following a distress call. However, the attackers fled upon sighting the advancing security personnel.

The police said calm has since been restored in the area, while the injured victims have been taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. The bodies of the deceased have been handed over to their families for burial in accordance with Islamic rites.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, CP Ali Umar Fage, has ordered the deployment of additional tactical teams to prevent further attacks. He also directed security operatives to intensify patrols and strengthen collaboration with other agencies and local communities.

The command expressed condolences to the bereaved families and assured residents that efforts are ongoing to apprehend those responsible. It also urged members of the public to provide useful information to aid ongoing investigations and report any suspicious activities to security authorities.
