The Bauchi State Government has lifted the suspension on commercial activities in selected cattle markets across the state in preparation for the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir festival.
The markets, located in Alkaleri, Bauchi, Kirfi and Tafawa Balewa Local Government Areas, were earlier shut on April 9 due to security concerns.
The development was confirmed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to Governor Bala Mohammed, Mukhtar Gidado, who said the governor had approved the immediate reopening of the markets.
According to the statement, the decision was taken to allow residents access to livestock for the religious festival, given the critical role of the markets in the state’s livestock economy.
The reopening, however, will be temporary, lasting for two weeks.
Gidado added that the move followed consultations with security agencies, who, alongside local authorities and traditional leaders, would closely monitor activities to ensure safety and order during the period.
