The Chairman of the Bauchi State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Alhaji Adamu Muhammad Duguri, has expressed deep concern over the rising number of out-of-school children in the state, placing much of the blame on the negligence of parents and teachers.
Duguri made the remarks following an inspection tour of public schools across the state capital to monitor third-term resumption.
He described the conditions observed during the visits as both alarming and disappointing.
Despite the state’s substantial investment in the education sector, Duguri lamented that the efforts are being undermined by a lack of commitment from key stakeholders—especially parents and educators.
At Sabon Gari Primary School on Ningi Road in Bauchi Local Government Area, Duguri revealed that only 52 students were present, with all teachers absent.
Similarly, at Gubi Primary School, just one of six teachers—the headmaster—was on duty, and student attendance remained poor.
The most concerning case, according to Duguri, was at Kundum Primary and Junior Secondary Schools, which were found locked and completely deserted. Further inquiry revealed that the Principal of Kundum Junior Secondary School had not reported to work since February 14, 2025.
“The attitude of some parents and teachers is sabotaging the government’s commitment to revamp the education sector,” Duguri said, stressing the urgent need for accountability.
He warned that disciplinary actions, including suspension, would be taken against any teacher found absent without justification.
The Board also plans to intensify unannounced visits to schools, especially in remote areas, to ensure improved supervision and teaching standards.
Duguri reiterated SUry measures, noting that effective teaching and learning are critical to reducing the number of out-of-school children and improving educational outcomes across Bauchi State.
