Abia State Governor Alex Otti paid a visit to the convicted leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, at the Sokoto Correctional Centre on November 30.

The meeting, held behind closed doors, was confirmed by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma.

During the visit, Governor Otti encouraged Kanu to remain strong and assured him that ongoing efforts regarding his plight have intensified despite his conviction.

The governor emphasized that the issue surrounding Kanu’s freedom would be resolved administratively.

“Governor Otti expressed satisfaction that the Sultan of Sokoto shares his view on the need for Kanu’s release and the de-escalation of tensions,” Ekeoma said.

He added that the Sultan jokingly remarked that Kanu was now his subject and mentioned plans to turban him—a comment that reportedly made Kanu laugh heartily.

Kanu, in high spirits during the visit, thanked Governor Otti for coming and said he was not surprised by the prompt visit, noting that Otti had shown similar gestures in the past.

He also praised the governor’s achievements in Abia State since assuming office, comparing his impact to that of the late Dee Sam Mbakwe, former governor of the old Imo State, whose legacy remains celebrated.

Kanu encouraged Otti to continue his diligent service to the people.

He told the governor that his focus remained on good governance and initiatives that improve the lives of citizens.

Governor Otti was accompanied by Abia State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechukwu Uwanna (SAN), his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma, and top officials from the Sokoto State government, including commissioners and advisers.

Also present was Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel.
