Betis shock Real Madrid as Monaco compound PSG misery

Real Madrid’s perfect start to the La Liga campaign came crashing down on Friday as Real Betis snatched a 1-0 victory over the Spanish giants.

The result handed Madrid their first league defeat of the season and extended their winless run away to Betis to four matches.

Despite dominating large portions of the contest, Madrid were unable to convert their opportunities, with Vinicius Jr. and Kylian Mbappe among those guilty of wasting chances.

Mbappe had a particularly frustrating night after failing to finish when Vinicius released him through on goal.

Betis goalkeeper Alvaro Valles played a decisive role in keeping the hosts in the contest, producing five important saves to frustrate the visitors.

Jude Bellingham also came close with a header that Valles stopped, while Dean Huijsen saw another headed effort crash against the crossbar.

Betis eventually found the breakthrough nine minutes before full time when substitute Troy Parrott capitalised on a defensive mistake and fired past Thibaut Courtois.

Madrid thought they had rescued a point three minutes before the end of regulation time after Carlos Espi found the net, but the effort was ruled out for offside during the build-up.

The night went from bad to worse for Madrid in stoppage time when Mbappe missed a penalty, completing a frustrating outing for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

While Madrid stumbled in Spain, French champions Paris Saint-Germain also endured another disappointing night at home.

PSG surrendered an early lead to lose 2-1 to Monaco at the Parc des Princes, suffering consecutive home defeats against their opponents.

Marquinhos put the hosts ahead after bundling the ball into the net, but Monaco responded strongly after the break.

Nazinho restored parity in the 58th minute before Stanis Idumbo completed Monaco’s comeback 14 minutes later.

The victory maintained Monaco’s perfect start under Felipe Luis, with the club collecting nine points from three matches.

For PSG, however, the defeat extended their difficult beginning to the campaign, leaving the reigning Ligue 1 champions winless and marking their worst start in the modern era.
